US electric vehicle giant Tesla has launched its first showroom, in India's largest commercial city of Mumbai. It represents the company's opening move into the huge Indian car market.

The Tesla India entry marked a new beginning in the country's EV landscape, with the company's Model Y launched to compete against BYD Sealion 7 and BMW iX1 among others.

Tesla's much-awaited India debut came after long negotiations with the Indian government over pricing and import duties.

Tesla inaugurated its first showroom in India on Tuesday, located in Mumbai. The launch was followed by a dramatic showcase on Wednesday when Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde drove a Tesla car into the state legislature premises,

According to the Tesla's website, Model Y will be introduced in two versions, including Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive.

The Tesla Model Y Pearl White Multi-Coat RWD costs Rs 62,02,640 in Delhi and Rs 62,03,140 in Mumbai. While the RWD Long Range is priced at Rs 70,10,640 in Delhi and 70,11,140 in Mumbai.

The internet and social media has been buzzing with Tesla updates ever since the American electric vehicle (EV) giant officially set foot in India with its first shop in Mumbai. The company also launched its first product in the country — Model Y — at a starting price of Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom).
